Fighting weeds is a year round job. Weed prevention is best practiced in spring or fall to take advantage of the grasses growing season.
A healthy lawn is the best defense against weeds. A weed infested lawn is often a sign of a nutrient imbalance or other soil problems.
First focus on getting a healthy lawn. Consider minimizing turf area to only areas where grass grows easily. A smaller area of weed free grass is more attractive than a large weed infested lawn.
Small weed patches can be hand pulled or dug, but larger patches need a little help from herbicides.
Pre-emergent work by preventing seed germination. This is a preventative measure. Once the weeds are growing they are no longer effective.
Post-Emergent work by killing the growing plant. They are best applied while the plant is growing.
